In a
recent article written for BBC, Anthony Zurcher
considers the possible consequences of President Obama's Clinton endorsement in
regards to voter turnout among political and racial groups. Zurcher looks to
past polls among these groups in order to reveal trends that Obama's
endorsement could potentially result in. For example, Obama's success in
engaging youthful voters (60% of voters under 30 voted Obama in the 2008
elections) could help Clinton win these supporters from the candidate who
previously held favor with the youth, Bernie Sanders. Racially, Obama's support
of Clinton will likely increase voting turnout among minorities, as
demonstrated in the record-high turnout of blacks in 2008, at 69%.
This
article in particular is helpful in understanding what Obama’s endorsement
means in terms of projected election outcome. His support could be the deciding
factor for a large range of both Democratic and Republican voters who feel
uncertainty about Clinton and Trump, and who, without it, would be tempted to
opt out of voting in the election altogether.
